I thought it was a great workshop. I think this would really be beneficial advertised to students or just starting out in their career.

I am looking forward to the next part in workshop and would like to explore more abstract concepts.

It was so great, as a recent graduate it is so helpful to try to disconnect from English words. It's so tough!!! Thank you for breaking it down. I'm looking forward to part 2! I really enjoyed the break out rooms as well :) Interactive workshops really make you pay attention.

I really enjoyed this workshop. It covers subject matter that is not offered in workshops, but is necessary in real world interpreting situations.

It was very helpful to me. Seth is amazing and talented. I learned so much.

I thought it was fantastic. I thought the presenter, Seth Gore, was clear and well prepared.

The training was helpful and the overall concept to "forget the words" hit close to home as I sometimes struggle to figure out how to sign something.
10

It was an awakening experience and insight into ASL and trusting the body. Thank you.

I appreciated learning a new way to think about representing concepts through the instrument or the function rather than word or classifier. I do plan to practice thinking this way until it is mine and automatic.

I always want more. Great organization and structure with beginning intro and final wrap up that referred back to the beginning, such a nice bookending of information. I really appreciate that teaching style.

Loved the workshop this morning-! Thank you Seth for conceiving of this important training that goes into the mental habits we have coming from spoken, auditory language that block us from tuning into the natural processes of visual language.

I loved it and will definitely try to take more of your workshops! You are clear and foster learning.

I told my husband that this was the ONLY workshop I was looking forward to in the recent “season.” With the PPO push, it seems that’s all that RID and local chapters are focusing on - and it’s getting old. So your workshop was refreshing! Afterward, I told him that it was an excellent use of my time!

This was a great way to get hearing signers away from the English language. Thank you!

I really liked the idea of what you were teaching.

I really enjoyed the examples and how encouraging you were for us to participate and not to focus on what is "right or wrong" but rather just getting our hands up and trying

I really liked the information about language development and how different it was for hearing and deaf. It made your point very clear about learning by feel, emotion and function, instead of just translating words. Now I understand how native signers are so different from non-natives. This will definitely be a huge help in achieving A level of fluency. I look forward to taking the next level workshop.

I really enjoyed his workshop! He is so friendly and open to discussion. I learned a lot from the workshop.

It was a really good workshop! I am an interpreting student and I think that this was extremely beneficial for me!

The workshop is a good fit for newer signers. I would like to learn to apply these concepts to complicated situations I work in as an interpreter - where I find myself stuck between words and wanting a more visual

I appreciated that this workshop didn't use linguistics jargon, so a lot of that was baked into the whole thing.

I think the workshop was great as is. Wish there was more time to practice more examples but overall I really enjoyed the workshop and the tools provided.

Everything was great. I just wish we had more time!

I thoroughly enjoyed this workshop. It really shows how to show rather than tell in ASL. Learning this difference makes a difference for my deaf consumer, making less work for them to understand my interpretation and signing.

Very helpful. I like that you focused on just 2 points (handle and instrument). That way I was able to learn those 2 REALLY well instead of a long list just a little bit.

I loved the whole idea of unlearning words!! showing not telling. This was good workshop for all levels, both beginning signers and interpreters.

I found the workshop to be very practical. I can start applying principles right away.

You presented a very clear and positive perspective on teaching and thinking about ASL. I wished we had more time to discuss teaching activities that I can use to start my virtual students, whom I've never met in person and most of whom are new to high school, to get them started thinking this way.

This is one of the BEST workshops I've had in a long time. Clear, concise, and practical. I would DEFINITELY attend Part 2. When will that be???? I have already alerted some students to register for the session tomorrow. One attended today.

This workshop really helped me gain more insight on signing conceptually and not every single word. I think my interpreting will be much stronger because of this workshop!

Great workshop! Really made me step back and take a look at how I sign and the best ways to produce signs. The part that really stuck with me is how you really have to consider how you physically handle things before producing, like in the car looking for coffee. Even though the english sentence said "looking", you do not use your eyes when driving and looking for an object, you use your hands.

This workshop was wonderful! I have been working in the interpreting field for many years, and it is nice to be able to still gain new perspectives that will really help my work. I liked the idea of handles and instrumentals.

Hands down best workshop I ever attended. Stayed on topic, offered what was expected, everyone seemed like they wanted to be there and participated, was interactive...THANK YOU!

I really enjoyed the workshop and am excited to take the other parts. It connects with a number of issues I've felt as a second-language learner - feeling inhibited in my expression. I think what I learned today will help a lot with framing how I practice.

I loved the workshop, especially the hands on part. I am a senior in my interpreting program and we are taught to be more formal in our signing (no sticking the tongue out, etc) so I have a lot of trouble breaking away from that formality and it is hurting me in my use of classifiers and getting across a clear message. This WS has helped me to start to understand mouth morphemes more and how to use them. I hope to take the remainder of the series! Thank you!

I thought the workshop was very helpful by the simple comment we can remember "what is it like to touch"? We too many times make this harder than it should be and I liked how you mentioned that deaf people keep it rich and precise.

I loved the flow of this workshop - it didn’t feel like two hours. The mixture of lecture, breakout groups and whole group discussion was enjoyable and beneficial to my learning. Your clear expertise with the technology of Zoom led to a smooth experience meaning I could focus on the information being presented rather than being distracted by technology glitches. Information was clearly presented and the examples really cemented the learning.

I’ve been to many, many workshops through this years and honestly this was one of the most helpful and practical. I think this way of looking at interpreting will really change what I do in a positive way. Thank you !!! Looking forward to the next one.

I loved this workshop. I felt like this workshop opened my mind to seeing things in a different light. I loved how the things discussed have made me think deeper throughout the rest of the day about how I handle objects and can incorporate my body as a tool more into my interpreting.

I really enjoyed the content. It was all very new information for me. I also really appreciated the research aspect and would love to have the resources that were mentioned in the workshop in a handout to do more follow up independently. I would have been able to be in a workshop all day with you to dissect the topic further. One challenge of the workshop was the limited time! I do look forward to future sessions. I think that you handled the platform very successfully.

It was a wonderful, informative workshop and I can't wait for part 2.

I definitely see the benefit in the practice of releasing the words and yet I'm also curious as to how to retrain my brain to be able to let go of the words. If it was natural for me to do so, then I wouldn't need to learn how to unlearn words :) Thank you again for the workshop! I look forward to attending Part 2!

I enjoyed the information presented in the workshop. Setting the foundation of knowledge in regards to the "obsession" with words and how that can influence our perception and expression of a visual language was a helpful way to start. It set the tone of the workshop. Considering the online nature of this workshop, I felt the process to join in the meeting was quite seamless.

What you were saying about "unlearning words" makes sense. Deaf people do seem to have a different way of thinking that influences every aspect of their use of language. Using your body to represent emotions, concepts, and degree, is one of the things that makes ASL such a rich language. Changing my use of language to actually represent the things I am talking about, rather than merely using words to describe something, will be a challenge, but this course does give me a lot of "food for thought" and room for growth.

It emphasized what my teachers have been trying to drill into my head; Meaning over form. Learning to think beyond words was very useful.

I loved this workshop so much! At the beginning, it was tough to wrap my head around how to use visualization and body (including classifers of the hands) at the same time to convey a message. However, this workshop gave me a whole different perspective on how process the English language into ASL. If this workshop were a full on class, I would definitely invest my time learning on how to become a better signer. Thank you so much!!!

I really enjoyed this workshop! I thought it was really well done, both in the area of content and in the area of tech/logistics. While I was familiar with Zoom and split-screen, I appreciated the time you took making sure everyone was familiar with tech and could participate. I also appreciated your approach to the topic...you are welcoming and non-judgmental as a facilitator. It is clear that you are excited about your topic...that excitement came through clearly in your facilitation style. I am really looking forward the the next topics in the series. I manage staff interpreters and have just recommended this workshop to them in our staff meeting this morning!

I appreciated that you emphasized that there wasn't one "right answer." You reminded us that there are various ways to represent a single object. I need to remember that and trust my gut.

I really enjoyed the workshop a lot. It was very thought provoking and allowed me to look at sign language differently. I wish we had had more time to talk more about how ASL is grounded in the world around around us.

The time frame was enough to get some golden nuggets. I think a longer workshop would e incredible. The way you frame the use of embodying an experience for clear expression is right on.

This workshop is PHENOMENAL!!! This is where I tried to explain the hearing mentees/ASL students. Tank you for these examples and how I an use "tongue" to explain why we need to "un"tongue these language.

Seth took what can be a complex, difficult concept to learn and made it easy and fun. The examples were useful and really helped me to think visually. I have ideas now of how to use by body more when it comes to signing certain concepts.
